December is the start of the dry season, with clear mornings over the volcanoes. Antigua is the place to learn Spanish: four hours a day one to one, and the rest of the day speaking it at a host family's table. Once your legs are used to the altitude, a night on Acatenango, watching Fuego erupt across the saddle, then the lake for the last day.

Antigua

Day1

Getting there

Fly into Guatemala City; a shuttle to Antigua takes one to one and a half hours.

Where you're staying

A host family in Antigua, arranged by the school: your own room, three meals a day and dinner conversation as the best lesson of all.

  • Six nights in all, before and after the volcano
  • USD 35 a night with three meals, or USD 225 a week; no meals on Sundays (the school's 2026 prices)
  • A private bedroom; the bathroom is shared

Chichicastenango

Day2

The day

The Sunday market at Chichicastenango, the biggest in the highlands: weavings, masks, flowers and food, and the incense on the steps of the church of Santo Tomás.

  • About two and a half hours each way by shuttle
  • At about 2,000 m, a good day for getting used to the altitude before the volcano
  • Small notes in quetzales; ask before photographing people

Four hours one to one at La Unión Spanish School, at a table in the school's garden in the centre of Antigua, at your level from the first hour.

  • Three mornings, Monday to Wednesday, at USD 9.50 an hour one to one (the school's own 2026 price)
  • Afternoons free: the walk up to Cerro de la Cruz for the view over the town and Volcán de Agua

Burning the devil

Day4

The day

Lessons in the morning; at six in the evening, the Quema del Diablo, when bonfires burn in front of houses across the country to sweep out the year.

Coffee

Day5

The day

The last lesson, then an afternoon with a coffee cooperative in San Miguel Escobar, from the plant to the cup. The volcano briefing is this evening.

A night on Acatenango

Day6

Day 6 · Thu 9 Dec

The hike

Up Acatenango with OX Expeditions, through farmland, cloud forest and pine to OX's own camp at about 3,400 m, with wooden cabins facing Fuego. After dark, Fuego throws up lava every few minutes, close enough to hear.

  • USD 119 with guide, transport from Antigua, lunch, dinner, hot drinks and warm gear to borrow; the park fee of Q100 is paid on the day
  • An optional climb onto the ridge towards Fuego costs USD 40 more
  • It drops below freezing at camp: everything warm you own

Before you go

Fuego is one of the most active volcanoes in the Americas. In June 2025 an eruption paused the overnight hikes; we check the volcano's status in the days before.

Sunrise and down

Day7

The day

The summit of Acatenango at dawn, then down; back in Antigua by midday for a hot shower and a last dinner with the family.

Lake Atitlán

Day8

The day

A shuttle to Panajachel and a morning boat to San Juan La Laguna, before the afternoon wind; a night at Eco-Hotel Mayachik, rated 9.1 on Booking.com.

Home

Day9

Getting home

An early boat across the lake and about four hours to Guatemala City airport for an evening flight.
