Five days for two on São Miguel, based in one clifftop suite, built around whale watching, a geothermal cozido in Furnas, and the pace of an island most of Europe skips.

Land at Ponta Delgada, collect the rental car (see Practical notes), and drive the 20 minutes to Lagoa.
- No plans on purpose: settle in, walk the cliff path, use the infinity pool before the light goes

Cardume, the hotel's own restaurant: a farm-to-table tasting menu built around the day's catch and the garden out back.
Sete Cidades, the crater-lake walk
Today
A 40-minute drive across the island to Sete Cidades, then the Miradouro da Grota do Inferno viewpoint loop (about 1.2km, roughly 45 minutes) looking straight down into the twin volcanic lake: one side reads blue, the other green, depending on the light.
- Kayaks and bikes can be rented lakeside if the mood strikes
Dinner
A Tasca, Ponta Delgada: a lively, art-filled local tavern serving generous plates of Azorean home cooking (morcela with pineapple, sesame-crusted tuna).
- No reservations taken, arrive by 7:30pm or put your name down at the bar

Morning
A boat trip out of Ponta Delgada marina with Futurismo Azores Adventures, the island's largest and best-reviewed operator: three dedicated shore/boat spotters and a marine-biologist briefing on every trip.
- About 2.5–3 hours, departing the Portas do Mar marina

Afternoon
Back at the hotel by early afternoon, infinity pool, a spa treatment, or simply the terrace.
- Water is on the cool side for casual swimming by late October, so this reads as a boat day rather than a swim day
Year-round residents
Sperm whales live off São Miguel's south coast all year; humpbacks are still passing through in October, with none of the July–August crowds at the marina.
Dinner
Alabote, Ribeira Grande: a terrace restaurant over the sea, known for charcoal-grilled fresh fish and the cataplana a Alabote seafood stew.

A full day around the Furnas valley, about 45 minutes from the hotel.
Lunch
Lunch is the island's signature dish: a stew of meats and vegetables buried in a volcanic steam vent by Lagoa das Furnas and cooked for 6–7 hours by geothermal heat alone, no fire, no electricity. Tony's Restaurant, a family-run dining room serving the dish since the 1970s.
Afternoon: the thermal pools
Poça da Dona Beija: five iron-rich pools at around 39°C set in a small jungly ravine.
- Tickets are sold online only, 90-minute sessions, no cancellations once purchased, so buy the slot a few days ahead
- Bring swimwear and a spare bag; the iron-rich water can mark light fabrics

Kept deliberately light after a heavy lunch: dinner at the hotel or room service at Cardume.
A last stop, then departure
This morning
Late checkout if the room allows, then a stop at the Gorreana tea plantation on the way back toward the airport, Europe's only tea plantation, free self-guided visit and tasting, about 30 minutes from Ponta Delgada.

Return the rental car at least 2 hours before your flight and depart from Ponta Delgada (PDL).
