Oman with children: wadis, desert and turtles

Eight days for a family with young children in February: Muscat's old harbour, a swim up Wadi Shab, turtles at night, a camp in the dunes and the mountain villages around Nizwa.

February is mild in Oman: warm days for swimming, cool nights in the desert. The distances are short and the roads good, so young children manage a loop that would take a fortnight elsewhere: Muscat for two days, the coast road to the wadis and the turtle beach, one night in the sands, and two in the old town of Nizwa below the mountains. Every day has one big thing in it and time to rest.

Flagship day

Wadi Shab and the turtles

Day3

Day 3 · Mon 15 Feb

The day

Early down the coast road to Wadi Shab: a short boat across the river, then about 40 minutes on foot up the canyon to green pools. Small children paddle in the shallows; older ones, with you, swim on through a gap in the rock to a cave with a waterfall.

  • Arrive by eight, before the crowds and the heat
  • Water shoes, and life vests for the children; the last part is a scramble where you lift them over rocks
  • Modest swimwear: Wadi Shab is a village valley

Evening

The evening tour at the Ras al Jinz turtle reserve, where a ranger leads small groups onto the beach to watch green turtles come ashore to lay.

  • Tours at 20:30; about 12 rials a person, 6 for children of 3 to 12, free under 3
  • February is outside the main nesting season, so a sighting is likely but not certain; the dawn tour sees fewer

Turtle beach

Green turtles nest at Ras al Jinz all year round, most of all between May and October, which makes it one of the great nesting beaches of the Indian Ocean.

  • One night in a room for four
  • Rated 9.1 on Booking.com from about 830 reviews
  • About CHF 58 for the night (checked for 15 Feb 2027, 7 Oct 2026)
